Payments at consumer scale
Payment application development at a top US card network, including a national mobile payments platform — the operational reality of high-volume flows.
The situation
A national mobile payments platform at a top US card network: high-volume consumer flows where the interesting engineering is not the happy path but everything around it — duplicates, partial failures, reconciliation breaks, returns, and the timing windows between them.
What we did
- Payment application development on the platform, with a focus on the failure modes that decide whether a payments system is trustworthy at volume: idempotent submission, reconciliation against the network, return and reversal handling, and the operational tooling to see all of it.
The outcome
Production experience with the patterns that now underpin every rails integration we build — idempotency keys, reconciliation as a first-class component, and callbacks treated as hints rather than facts.
What it shows
Consumer-scale payments teach the discipline that instant-payment rails demand: the network’s message is not the truth; your reconciled ledger is.
